Classes Resume at All Saints Secondary

7th March 2016

All Saints Secondary students returned to their classrooms on Monday, a week after fire destroyed the administrative block on their school's compound.

Motivational speakers and teachers were among those who greeted the more than 700 students who then participated in a student and teachers motivational and inspirational programme. Praise and worship, words of encouragement and scripture reading formed part of Monday morning's activity.

Acting Director of Education, Clare Browne, said the aim of the programme was to lift the spirits of both the teachers and students.

"Having the motivational session was a way of steering them away from what took place. To have come this morning and pretend that nothing happened and report for classes may have been counter-productive.

"To give them an opportunity to be together, to huddle and talk about the accomplishments of the school will help them to see the possibilities that All Saints School can realize," Mr. Browne noted.

Among those who addressed the assembly was former All Saints Secondary School Principal, Dame Eusalyn Lewis.

Education officials and school administrators are working to return normal operations at the institution. Two classrooms have been converted to staff rooms, and large machinery, including Risograph and Copiers are being sourced. Over the weekend the burnt out administrative block was cleared of debris and barricaded. Additionally, the air quality was tested and is at satisfactory level.

"The Chief Health Inspector Mr. Lionel Michael visited the site on Sunday and tested the air. He has reported normal air quality. So there is no reason why school cannot re-start," the Acting Director of Education pointed out.

Investigations remain ongoing into what started the fire at All Saints Secondary School that caused major structural damage. Decades of school records were also destroyed in the blaze.

Meantime, re-registration for all students attending All Saints Secondary will be held on Thursday. Parents are to take along a passport-sized photo and the original and a photocopy of their child or children.
