EMS Supervisory Course gets underway this week

15th February 2016

Technicians attached to the Antigua Barbuda Emergency Medical Services are to undergo a ten week Supervisory Management Training Course at the University of the West Indies Open Campus situated on University Drive and Queen Elizabeth Highway.

The course, which will start on February 16th, has the full backing of the Ministry of Health and Environment, and will feature classes in leadership qualities, human resources and people to people skills.

Improving client satisfaction, Practical Competency in Supervisory Discipline as well as Cost Reduction and Grievances will also be covered.

Commenting on the initiative, EMS Supervisor of Training and Transportation, Morvin Fiedtkou expressed his pleasure with the venture, saying that it all bodes well with the department’s plan to become a better and more efficient entity.

“EMS is looking to continue the education process of its staff, so our shift leaders will be undergoing the supervisory management course and we are doing this so that the current department leaders will have some more experience and practical knowledge on how to run the operation and be a more efficient service”, Fiedtkou said.

The event will be under the supervision of Instructor Shirlene Nibbs and the curtains will come down on the exercise on Thursday April 21st.

Dean of the University Mr. Ian Benn said that the campus was more than willing to help the people of Antigua and Barbuda in any capacity.

“The EMS approached the Open Campus with a proposal to offer certification in the Emergency Medical Technicians` Basic and Advance Programs and the Open Campus is very pleased to serve the Community in which it exists”, Benn said.

According to EMS Director, Shawn Greenidge, the EMS-UWI partnership will not be a one-time event, because as of September 2016, there will be another collaborative effort between the two bodies for an Emergency Technician Refresher Training Course for Basic and Advance Level.

Over a dozen EMT’s will participate in the February to April training course.
